Love Food Hate Waste (2)

Back in March (28/03/2009) I wrote about the British campaign to reduce the amount of food that we throw away uneaten. There is now a website with lots of good ideas to help people eat what they buy rather than throwing it out. I’ve found parts of it quite useful so thought I’d pass it on – today I’ve been looking at salad tips given the lovely weather Salad days and Picnics – Love Food Hate Waste , on the side of the page are lots of tabs to other tip topics.  Must go and get my lettuce sorted out for the week…….

The Non-consumer Train – Be a voice (3)

We went looking a few weekends ago for the little part of the shower unit that holds up the shower head as my mum’s had broken in half. (We had already looked at Trade Me etc). We finally found the piece but the plumbing guy said that most people didn’t buy these due to their price, they just bought whole new shower units. At $62 it was at that breaking point where you do tend to wonder if it would be best to invest a bit more and get the whole shower unit brand new given that my mum’s shower is about 12 years old. I took a gamble and stood firm to my ‘non-consumer train’ voice and just bought the actual piece that we needed rather than throwing out a perfectly good shower unit and replacing it. Only time will tell if it was the right decision.

Check those receipts!

I wrote a while back (18/06/2009) about checking supermarket receipts. Glancing through my Pak n Save receipt from Saturday everything was fine until I got to the end and found a cheque fee of 25 cents – problem was I had paid by credit card. So after finishing my grocery shopping today I pointed out the error and received 30 cents back in coins – that’s technically a 20% increase.
